Thrifted Finds # 16 :: Filthy Little Garden Gnomes

We headed up the mountain early Friday morning for an estate sale that sounded promising.  While we were paying for our goodies the gal running the sale gave us a flyer for another one on our way home & while en route to that one we stumbled over another just two blocks away.

such a dirty little gnome
They each had something of interest for the fella & for me.  The first one had all of these yard ornaments that didn't look like they were part of the sale, but I had to ask.  When she said yes I asked how much (expecting some exorbitant figure) & she told me the gnomes were $3 (for all 4!) & the heavy concrete doe I had my eye on was $2 (oh, gasp & swoon ... who's my favorite lady EVER)!

They were filthy & filled with black widows (seriously, I squashed three on the way to Yoko, blargh!) but I got them home & gave them a thorough spritz & scrub & look how nicely they turned out.  They have tons of crazing & a bit of mossy growth, but I'll leave that.  I've wanted a set of vintage gnomes for a coon's age & now I have to find the perfect spot on our property to put them.

this one's on his hands & knees ... too cute

nappy time near a mossy rock

sleepiest gnomes ever

he sure cleaned up nice

I found so much more good stuff at all three sales, but I'll leave it with this for now.  We're having a bunch of work done on the house & everything is out of place which is driving me crazy.  I'm going to put my laundry room back together & then get ready to go meet up with Chucky for car club tonight at In-n-Out.

    1. Ugh, I know! I was actually bitten by one when I was 19 while we were traveling, it was horrible. Needless to say, they give me the bobojeebies something fierce!

  3. Hi Poppy!

Thank you so much for stopping by the blog - loving yours! :-) The last little gnome of the group has to be my favourite, he has such an adorable face! Ick on the black widows though *shudders* I'm a touch arachnophobic so you did better than me taking them on!

    1. Thanks for stopping by Jem! Really I wouldn't have touched them if I'd have seen those spiders first, but the little buggers were hollow & not solid as I expected & the spiders sort of jumped ship when we picked them up. GAH! Makes my skin crawl just typing about it!

    1. I have a few little gnomes & toadstools in pots as well & I just love looking at them, especially when the delicate potted plants come indoors during the cold months. Gnomes always remind me of greener times.

  8. How incredibly cute! Not sure if I could have handled the spider situation, but it sounds like it was worth it! ;)

    1. Well worth it, though had I known about the spiders before I picked them up I may have let them stay there!

  9. I have these exact same gnomes! My mom painted them in her ceramics class in the 70's when I was a child. My husband thinks they are creepy, so I hide them around the house in places I know he will find them. heh heh

    1. That cracks me up, I do the same thing to my husband with a few items that he finds creepy! I was guessing these were from a pottery class during the '70s because the house was FILLED with hand made ceramic items!

  11. I love it when that happens- when you expect a high price but get the best deal ever. Great kitschy score you've got here!

    1. Luckily the entire sale turned out that way, by an estate sale duo notorious for very high prices which is why I was leery in the first place. Goes to show there's no harm in asking! I think things were so dirty they just didn't want to bother with any cleaning up & sold everything as-is & cheap.
